What is Homemaker Home Health Aide Care?
A Homemaker or Home Health Aide is a trained individual who assists Veterans in their homes with personal care and daily living tasks. Although they are not nurses, they are supervised by a registered nurse who assesses the Veteran’s needs.
This program supports Veterans who:
- -Need skilled services, case management, or help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or meal prep.
- -Are isolated or whose caregivers are experiencing stress or burnout.
Services may be combined with other Home and Community Services and vary by location. Aides are employed by VA-contracted organizations and can be a valuable alternative to nursing home care, including respite support at home.
Am I Eligible?
Yes. These services are part of the VHA Standard Medical Benefits Package. All enrolled Veterans with a clinical need may qualify.
Copays may apply depending on your disability status.
What Services Can I Get?
Services are based on assessed needs. A VA social worker can help determine how often an aide may visit, whether it’s several times a week or just occasionally.
Examples of assistance may include help with:
- -Eating
- -Dressing
- -Personal grooming
- -Bathing
- -Using the bathroom
- -Mobility
- -Transportation to appointments
You can continue using these services as long as you need assistance with daily living.
Is It Right for Me?
You can use the Veteran Decision Aid for Care at Home or in the Community to determine what care services best meet your current or future needs. Caregivers can also complete a self-assessment to evaluate their own capacity to support you.
Your care team and VA social worker can assist with care planning. Ask your social worker for these tools or download them from the Making Decisions and Advance Care Planning section at VA.gov.
If Homemaker or Home Health Aide services are a good fit, your VA social worker will help you arrange them.
A Ten Year Wait?
Veterans who apply on their own at a local VA Office can wait up to 10 years to receive a
decision on their application. There are currently 900,000 lost/pending VA benefit applications at
the VA due to inexperienced workers at local VA offices helping Veterans file their
applications.

About VA Benefits
Our agency, Legacy Homecare Group is a non-medical home care agency that offers a wide
selection of services such as dementia care, personal hygiene, mobility assistance, respite care,
veteran care, and many more. What sets us apart from other agencies is that we specialize in
helping Veterans and their spouses get funding from the VA to pay for aide care that can help
them stay independent and safe at home.
We use the services of a qualified 3rd party to help our clients get access to a VA
Benefit named “Aid and Attendance.” The 3rd party does not charge the Veteran or their family
a penny to assist them. We are one very few home care agencies in this area that is exclusively
associated with this organization to provide this no fees service to veterans and their spouses.
The VA benefit can provide up to $2,600 per month to Veterans and their spouses who need
non-medical care/assistance to help them with activities of daily living in their home or chosen
place of residence. There are currently over 15 million Veterans and their surviving spouses
nationwide who are believed could qualify for this benefit and only 3% of them are currently
taking advantage of it.
Our 3rd party will ensure that all our clients get expedited access to their VA Benefits by
ensuring their benefit applications are accurate and complete when filed – avoiding costly delays
that can take literally years to remedy. Again, there is no cost to the Veteran or their family for
this service.
Aside from home care services we love to inform/educate our veterans about other
resources and benefits they can acquire locally. Such as free round-trip transportation through
LYFT to get groceries from the food bank, services such as counseling, financial assistance, and
many more that are offered through non-profit organizations that we are aware of.
